We all have natural hair goals to achieve for this year. We want to achieve long, luscious length so we are trying different hair growth techniques. But, did you know that your hair grows ½ inch every month? Yes, ladies, your natural hair is growing. In order for us to see how long our hair can get, we need to be retaining the length. Length retention is crucial in allowing you to achieve your natural hair goals. It is a series of techniques as well as products to use to aid you in minimizing breakage, strengthening your hair shaft, reducing single strand knots and split ends. So what are the length retention techniques that you can start doing?  You'd be surprised just how simple it is to get started retaining length.  Here are 3 tips to jump-start your long hair regimen.

Deep Conditioning Weekly – Under no circumstances should any natural miss deep conditioning their hair on a weekly/biweekly basis. Deep conditioning allows your tresses to be fortified with the vitamins, minerals as well as nutrients to provide it with moisture and strength.  In addition, it prepares our hair for the week ahead until the next wash day. You should deep condition for 15 to 30 minutes using indirect heat (i.e. hooded dryer) and a quality conditioner designed specifically for deep conditioning. The heat will raise the cuticle layers so that the deep conditioner will penetrate into your strands to boost the overall health of your tresses.

Sleeping With Satin
: - Your night time hair care routine should not be skipped!  Sleeping on satin lined items, like bonnets and satin pillowcases,  or tying your hair with a satin scarf is essential for protecting your delicate strands.  Cotton will remove the moisture from your hair as well as rub against it, thus, making it susceptible to breakage which is what we are trying to avoid. Satin aids in your hair ability to retain moisture and keep hair soft and manageable.

Protective styling: Protective styling is a step that should be done as much as possible. As the name suggests it protects your hair form styling, therefore, it gives it a break for an extended period of time. The time period could be a week, 3 weeks, or even 6 weeks. However, you should not extend the life of a protective style longer than 3 months because your hair and scalp need to be refreshed. Protective styling keeps your hands and tools from pulling and snagging on your hair strands. In addition, it will cover your natural hair to protect it from the environment as it revives itself. There are various styles that you can try such as mini twists, box braids, Havanna twists, buns, faux locs, or the ever-popular sew-in weaves and wigs.  Remember, just because your hair is resting in a protective style does not mean you can neglect your strands.  Moisturizing and sealing regularly is a must.  Also, continue to cleanse and condition your hair and scalp.  Protective styling is a great time to utilize growth aids like Greenhouse Herbal Hair Growth Oil to maximize new growth.

Consistency is key in order to achieve length retention. Are you ready to incorporate these simple techniques to retain length and achieve your goals?
